Wow, this is the first time I've Xangaed in ages. You can blame David for this post. Sorry. At least this post contains less meaningless ranting than the others. Or so I like to think.

Fifty bucks says that's David trying to poke me in the ribs for MY being a hypocrite about race,blahblah and this is a nice way of him doing it. :P

I had better defend myself, then, since I was going to defend myself anyway that day that we were talking about it but I was feeling too silly. Okay.

You know, that day we were talking about Fil going to Janeen's party and I was all "AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHA THAT'S FUCKING BRILLIANT" and stuff about it and you said "dude, it's just the colour of their skin"? Well... like... it's not.
Sorry, but I think that it's really idealistic and naive (with two dots on the i) of you to think that "it's just the colour of their skin". D'you really mean that there's no cultural difference between, say, Punjabis and Australians? Man, come on, you should know better than that, especially since you went out with ME and we spent 39052748 hours comparing the differences between our families.

...okay, this isn't a very good defence at ALL. I'm chucking a David Williamson (Ext Eng joke) and instead of saying "no I didn't steal the cookies" I'm saying "yes, I stole the cookies".

...okay fine, so I stole the damn cookies. I think there's a difference between Australians/Punjabis/Macedonians/Italians/everyone else. To quote Col (<i>Dead White Males</i>), I'm a dinosaur. So shoot me.

*sigh* I'd might also agree with your statement of "race doesn't exist" if only I knew what the word "race" meant. I'm just saying that there are, in most cases, very clearly defined cultural differences between people of different backgrounds.

But... like... just for the record, that post wasn't meant to be an all-out-offensive on David... it was actually supposed to be the completel opposite, me DEFENDING myself... and... also just for the record... I don't think you're pedantic, or sad, and I have no idea what instant means, but if it means what I guessed, then it doesn't sound like too bad a thing.

I was actually refuting against Fil, so I win $50 :D!

I know most that weblog was about culture. Janeen's party was of a very different culture to the typical Australian 18th birthday. I do believe we have culture (and I'm sorry for what I said on MSN back then Jas, I was wrong about that one) even if I don't think we are all bound to one single culture (I think I've gone into that somewhere else before. But can we have another look at the sentence in protest here?

Colour of their skin? Racial discrimination (not as in offending people of other races, but discriminating a while from a black)? I don't think skin colour is part of the culture

Fil, you can probably say that you're Maco, but you can't deny you're Aussie. You say you're more Macedonian at home and I can believe that. But you grew up here, you have been influenced greatly by all your friends. I don't believe everyone sticks to one culture, I also don't believe culture is as clear-cut as one large area (ie its based on era, age and a more specific location [like 2000s youth of suburban sydney as opposed to Australian] as well). But when you talk about nationality, you're Australian. You could call yourself Macedonian-Australian by ethnicity. But to call yourself Macedonian would either be a lie, or by saying what type of genes you have - which would be race.

Of course, that's what defines an Australian, isn't it? Australia as no cinemas, no entertainment centres, no music, no art galleries, no nothing. We all get by just fine nigelating ourselves, acting cool and smoking. Which no one else does. Nigelation, acting cool and smoking is what defines an Australian

well this is rather interesting.
throughout the whole of primary school, all the "australian" kids decided that their new favourite word was 'wog.' i recognised this as a derogatory term, which left me pretty confused as to how i viewed myself as an australian. eventually, as well all do, i got over it.
my point is that culture/race/blah can be a blessing and a curse at the same time.

mind you, what does piss me off is the alienating nature of australian steroetypes. the cobber. the digger. and the way people are always going on about glorious australian "mateship". fucking bleurgh.

I agree! Though I also get pissed off when wogs do it, too. No matter which culture started it, it just promotes futher racism.

I believe culture shouldn't be a blessing nor a curse, but just contribute to your identity. And I don't believe race itself exists (ie the colour of ones skin doesn't mean anything).
